The facing ratio shader can be used to create a toon shading effect. A tutorial can be found here.

facing ratio method is too generic and dones't allow to direct light.

how do you do a Toon shader depending on the light and oclussion?

You can use the Surface Luminance node in Maya. More information can be found at the end of the tutorial.

Lee, I stuck with this method here, in Houdini:

  • Delete the 2d texture of the Ramp and connect a Facing Ratio shader to the U parameter of the UV Coords in the Ramp (ensure that the Ramp Type is set to U also).

Any suggestion how to connect the Facing Ratio shader to the U parameter?

Hi @Lee Griggs, Is there any way to do the same effect of the Surface Luminance in Cinema 4D? Thanks!
