IPR big lags...But not always

Hi folks,

I freshly got my new setup, wich is basically a Threadripper 2990wx and GTX1080ti. I'm using C4D R20, Arnold 2.4.2.1, all my drivers are up to date, microsoft cc2015 installed.. My main problem is some big lags when using C4D viewport and Arnold IPR....BUT...That's a bit esoteric in my case: when i start a project with just a simple cube or any primitive + sky and HDR, all the project is laggy as hell, like 10 FPS...But if I open a super complex project, it will be laggy for 10 seconds then suddenly super smooth. Then if I come back to my basic cube it works fine (this weird process always work). It's really anoying, do some of arnold users know about this issue? I saw many topics related to IPR lags but still not found the right answer.

Thanks in advance for your help!

This is the first time I hear this. I'm not sure what's going on, might be a driver issue or something with the process priorities. Once it becomes smooth, does it remain smooth, or is it laggy again when you restart the IPR? Is it also laggy when you are rendering to the Picture Viewer in the background?

By default the IPR keeps one thread for the DCC, I wonder if setting the threads manually helps or not. Try to set -1 or -2 to Arnold Render Settings > System > Threads.

Thx for your answer.

Well, as soon as IPR becomes smooth, it stays smooth during all the session, also when I restart the IPR. If I create a new project during the same session, the new project will be smooth too! But as soon as I restart C4D IPR will lag until as I have a high amount of polygons in my scene...Super weird.

No changes when I change the settings unfortunatly...

Super weird, indeed. I have no idea what can cause this, to be honest. I know a couple of people using Arnold on Threadripper without any issues.

Can you check with a previous C4D version? R19 or R18?

I've got a fix candidate. Could you please try this build and let me know?

Hello Peter,

Well, your candidate is a winner! It works like a charm! Thanks a lot!!! No words to tell how good and responsive is Arnold support...I struggled so much with this problem. So finally was a priority process issue I guess?

Thanks again x1000 for your help!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll need some more users to test it and it will be available in the next bugfix release or in 2.4.5.

> So finally was a priority process issue I guess?

Yeah, it was the Windows scheduling system.
