White smoke without indirect volume samples

Is it possible to get white smoke without having indirect volume samples (as they slow down the render tremendously). the brighest I can get it is a mid grey.

What are your Standard Volume settings? Is Scatter Color white? Maybe increasing Scatter Weight, Density and light exposure can help too? Maybe even a little bit of Emission?

Yes, volume indirect can be expensive. Reducing Volume Ray Depth can help.
