Arnold is not visible for Houdini after default installation !

Hi !

Why Arnold is not appearing in Houdini after default installation process (like with Maya) ? Last version of HtoA is Houdini 17.0.459 but I use houdini 17.0.473 might it be an issue ?

It installs here by default C:\Users\Administrator\htoa , is that right path ?

There is no "right" path. The default install location is your home folder (C:\Users\Administrator), but you can choose a different location during installation.

Are you running Houdini under that Administrator account?

If not, you need to copy the settings from the Administrator houdini.env to your user folder.

And in general, the first thing to check is houdini.env

Yes , running Houdini under administrator.

here is my config file text :

#
# Houdini Environment Settings
#
# The contents of this file are read into the environment
# at startup. They will override any existing entries in
# the environment.
#
# The syntax is one entry per line as follows:
#    VAR = VALUE
#
# Values may be quoted
#    VAR = "VALUE"
#
# Values may be empty
#    VAR =
#
# Example:
#
# HOUDINI_NO_SPLASH = 1

# htoa config start

PATH = "$PATH;C:/Users/Administrator/htoa/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.459/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-${HOUDINI_VERSION}/scripts/bin"

HOUDINI_PATH = "C:/Users/Administrator/htoa/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.459/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-${HOUDINI_VERSION};&"
# htoa config end

Actually, what do you mean by "not visible" ? The tab menu doesn't show any Arnold-related nodes?

What, if anything, is printed in the Houdini Console when you start Houdini?

Can you check the Houdini environment?

  • In Houdini, click Help > About Houdini
  • Click Show Details
  • Click Save

If the Houdini details look ok, then I would get a Process Monitor log:

  • Download Process Monitor from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon and unzip it somewhere
  • Run Procmon.exe from where you unzipped it
  • Start capturing events
  • Start your Houdini
  • After Houdini finishes loading, stop the capture in Process Monitor, and save a PML file.
  • Zip the file and upload it somewhere if you want me to take a look

It looks like you have Houdini 17.0.473

There is no HtoA for that Houdini yet.

You have HtoA for Houdini 17.0.459, so you'd need that version of Houdini

Building each new version every time houdini updates is amazing collaboration between you and sidefx , by the way houdini updates every 2-3 days.

So and if someone works in studio environment (having their deadlines) and houdini fixes something that was vital for them , they need to wait for weeks to got proper Arnold from you ?

if you will look at my first post : it says "Last version of HtoA is Houdini 17.0.459 but I use houdini 17.0.473 might it be an issue ? "

once you install htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.459 with Houdini 17.473
Rename the folder htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.459 to htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.473 (twice)
in C:\Users\XXX\htoa\htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.459
and C:\Users\XXX\htoa\htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.459
then do the same thing to houdini.env file
Here is my houdini env.file

# htoa config start
PATH = "$PATH;C:/Users/rachid/htoa/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.473/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-${HOUDINI_VERSION}/scripts/bin;$PATH;"
HOUDINI_PATH = "C:/Users/rachid/htoa/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-17.0.473/htoa-3.2.2_rdc1beed_houdini-${HOUDINI_VERSION};&"
# htoa config end

Hi Ma Ya, we support the last 3 production versions of Houdini. Production versions are more thoroughly tested versions of Houdini, whereas daily builds are more risky. If you are a customer under a support contract, we can release a special build of HtoA for you on a case by case basis. Please contact support if this is the case.

To answer your original question, you do have to stick to the exact version of Houdini that HtoA was compiled against. We have found that you cannot expect binary backward compatibility, leading to sometimes hard to debug problems.

No I don't work at studio and have no deadlines , in my case I'm just testing arnold speed with pyro , and it works without bugs . Thank you !

"we can release a special build of HtoA for you on a case by case basis" that's what I thought , in case of studios you're contacting them directly and maybe helping them in "live mode" to solve the bug .
