How to render a white background

I'm looking for a way to get a white background, with or without shadows.

You could create a Skydome light and assign a Shadow Matte shader to a floor plane. Alternatively, add a Ray Switch shader to the environment and change Camera to white.

But the background and the surface beacame black, even though I defined a white color.
