Ramp Shader with Hard Edge

Hi,

So I just started using Arnold and have been using primarily a combination of Maya software and Mental Ray until now. For a previous project (using Mental Ray), I made a ramp shader with with curve interpolation set to "none" with color input set to "brightness" - so a harsh contrast of black and white with no gradient. I use this render to composite the shadows in my final result.

However, when I tried to recreate something similar in Arnold no matter how much I try, I can't get rid of the gradient. I've tried feeding the ramp shader into various other modes (aiStandard, Blinn, etc.) with no success.

Is there any way to create something similar to a ramp shader with no gradient? For reference, I'm recreating the lighting style from this short film (YouTube Link).

Thanks!

-Jonathan
