How to create puddles?

Hello,

I'm pretty new to Arnold and really enjoying it so far. There's one thing I'd like to do though and I can't seem to find a tutorial or answer anywhere yet, though I'm sure it's probably a pretty noob question. I would like to have a floor with various random areas on said floor contain wet, reflective puddles. I've tried to do this with the mix shader with a bump map made of noise but can't really get the effect I'm looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Maybe this tutorial works great for you:

Thank you, but that's a tutorial for Octane, not Arnold.

Of course but you can translate the same theory with Arnold.

I don't think this is an Arnold thing. I'd approach with geometry. If you created puddle holes, all you would need is a plane object with a water shader on it just under the floor.

Thanks, The Bag, I think I'll approach it that way.

The Coat Normal is also ideal for situations like this. A puddle example can be found on the Coat page.

You can definitely use that octane tutorial linked above and apply it to Arnold. That's what I did and it worked perfectly!
