Is there a way to use Render Selection to Texture for multiple objects and export one map?

At the moment a texture map is exported per geometry. I'd like to be able to have one map exported. After reading forums it seems the only way to do this is to merge the geometry but this isn't an ideal workflow and sometimes causes strange seams where the two geos intersect.
