I've noticed that for every aiStandIn shape node, there's a background arnold process launched which looks like determining bounds by evaluating an ABC procedurals - this slows down maya scenes considerably and somewhat kills the idea of a standin being a lightweight thing. Since ABC already stores bounds, would it be possible to use these ?
Now opening a scene with many aiStandIn's is way slower that it should be...
