creating a volumetric texture

i'm looking for a way to create a volume object from a stack of images, to visualize MRI data, just as shown here in this question in blender:

https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/15010/rendering-a-3d-volume

In blender you can just create a cube, and add on to it a volume texture that sources the image sequence. The image sequences become the volume object itself.

Can this be done in 3ds Max Mental Ray or Redshift?
