HtoA can't read any MtoA ASS procedurals (3.2.0)

Hi there,

I'm trying to transfer over a model from a Maya scene to use in Houdini, since I'm trying to set up a moss system; and Maya can't seem to handle to sheer amount of polys it takes to unpack all the copied objects - but I've already built shaders in Maya, and I really don't want to start all over again in Houdini, so I figured I could just use ASS files.

However, no matter what I export as an ASS, Houdini cannot read it at all, it only appears as the same cube BBox/Geometry each time, and the file node within the procedural states it cannot read the file. (pic attached)

I've installed 3 different versions of MtoA to ensure they are running on the exact same Arnold Core (5.2.10) and I'm completely at a loss of what I can do.

If anyone can help me that would be great, or, alternatively, if you could link me a resource to making realistic moss in Maya instead that would be even better xD - I absolutely hate doing lighting and scene assembly in Houdini.

You won't see the geometry in the viewport. Just the bounding box (if the ass file includes the bounding box info).

Did you render?

I don't think those errors are from Arnold or HtoA, so they can be ignored.

Yeah I've tried rendering, HtoA will just stop at 'Generating Scene' and not do anything, hiding the procedural makes the render go through as an empty scene. I have seen the bounding box sometimes change from the default depending on what I export; but still nothing renders out of it.

What confuses me is that Maya has no problem rendering them, this issue is only present in Houdini

It works for me. Ass file from MtoA 3.2.x in HtoA 4.0.2

Just tried with a different mesh, the bounding box is definitely being read correctly as it changes with each model, but I still can't get anything out. Renders still stuck on generating scene, and nothing is being output to the console.

Do you have any other suggestions? I'm using MtoA 3.1.1 and HtoA 3.2.0

  • Get an Arnold log.
  • Export the Houdini scene to an ass file and see what it contains.

I haven't seen any other reports of this type of problem.

Sorry for the late reply, tried both of these; Arnold log shows no errors in any mode including debug and detailed, and exporting to ass within houdini yields the same results, only with no BBox data at all. Absolutely no idea what to do

NEVER MIND! Forgot to expand procedurals when exporting from Houdini, and it now works!

So exporting from Maya, and then exporting again from Houdini works, but the direct export from Maya doesn't. Very strange, but I'm just glad its working. Thanks for all your help
