Is there any reason you shouldn't use an aiStandardSurface to shade hair instead of the aiStandardHair if the standrad surface is giving me the result I want? Are there render time differences?

I'm aware of this thanks I did read the documentation. I also don't think this project will have completely realistic hair. It's a purple colour. I'm pretty sure I have but I will test them again thanks

Melanin should be used to control the color. Diffuse is not recommended for realistic hair. Which color are you going for? Did you try any of the presets?
I wish I could :( I'll try to setup a scene to illustrate but basically just finding it difficult to get the colours to work except by introducing the "diffuse color" on the hair shader
You are free to use what you want but why isn't the Standard Hair shader giving you the results that you want? Can you post comparison images and times here, please? How is the scene being lit?
