Volume gradient banding?

How do I solve volume gradient banding such that I can get a perfectly smooth gradient of light dispersion? I have a simple spot light and an atmosphere_volume. Increasing the sample params in both do not fix the banding. I can't find any info on banding in the arnold docs.

My scene:

Does it happen in the IPR, Picture Viewer window and when you save it? Have you tried a different file format (EXR)?

Is there anything special in the scene? LUTs? Can you upload the scene?

The banding occurs in the IPR, picture viewer, and when it is saved. I will try EXR next.

Nothing special in the scene. No LUTs. Although in the IPR I am using its build in display tab modifiers such as saturation, contrast, gamma. With those turned off the image is still visibly banding, although not as much because the added contrast isn’t making it more apparent. But it’s definitely still there.

I will also upload the scene later when I’m back at my desktop.

@Lee Griggs

Here's the scene file. Just a light and an atmosphere_volume. Turn on the IPR display filter and crank up the contrast to make the banding more obvious.

I couldn't get EXR to work. Unless I was doing it wrong.

I thought you might have dither disabled but it looks like it is enabled. I believe this is expected behavior.

Where can dither be disabled?

In the png driver options.

@Peter Horvath Any ideas to solve this problem?
