default light temperature (6500) vs color set to white results do not correspond?

is this a bug?
I am finding that in a basic scene with a whatever simple object mapped with a raw exr texture (with whichever material, maya or arnold) . if the light is left to its default settings it will render slightly 'redder' than if disabling default color temperature and instead using color set to pure white...
This behaviour was driving me crazy while comparing renders using other renderers and also didnt make sense looking at the used texture colors on its own...
