Mixing multiple GPUs

Hello

I'm building a modeling/rendering box with multiple GPUs and have some questions about Arnold 6

I'm planning a new computer build and aim to get these four cards:

  • 1x Nvidia
    Titan RTX
  • 3x Nvidia RTX 2080Ti

  1. Does Arnold 6 Renderer use all four of these cards at the same time
    while rendering in GPU mode?
  2. If all four cards do get used at render time do they all get used at
    full capacity?
  3. Are there any limitations of using differing RTX GPUs at render time?

Thanks for any info.

You can have a mix of RTX cards and use them all.

What you can't do is mix RTX and non-RTX cards. In that case, you won't be able to render on all of them at the same time (just the all the RTXs at the same time).

Some more info:

Arnold will use all the GPUs at full capacity yes. It will also pool the memory if you have NVlink.

However you can only Nvlink 2 cards together at the same time. So your memory is bound by these "islands". The only limitation I can think of using differing RTX GPUs at render time is that the less powerful GPU will likely end up throttling the more powerful one as the work is divided between the GPUs evenly.

This is exactly what I was wondering. Perfect.

Just want to recommend to add your answers above to the 'GPU faq' as I think it might clarify things for all the people who will inevitably jump on the Arnold GPU bandwagon.

Thanks for the suggestion Roja, we've added this and a few more answers to the FAQ.
