Anyway to render DOF pass with objects in scene that have Transmission?

I have a scene with several 'thin' glass discs. DOF works fine when rendering straight out from the render but if i render with a Zpass to composite DOF in AE it doesn't read the 'transmission' (glass discs), they are just solid. I want to save render times by not having to render the scene with DOF and using a Zpass in AE will help with that. Is there any work around to get it to work correctly?

Have you tried Transmit AOVs?

I have just tried the Transmit AOVs but the Zpass isn't working as i hoped. Have attached a screenshot from AE (the discs are the glass discs). Do you know if there's anything else i needed to do apart from checking the Transmit AOVs and using the Zpass AOV?
