Slow IPR sessions

Hey,

Currently working on the lookdev of a scene and the machine I'm working on is struggling when it comes to the IPR. Just generally laggy and clunky when changing any settings.

It has an Intel e5-2695v4 @ 2.1ghz (36 cores) and 64gb of RAM.

The thing is I have another older machine which is running a

Intel e5-2680v3 @ 2.5ghz (21 cores) and 32gb of RAM which is running super smoothly whilst lookdeving.

The 2695 will render out a final frame much faster, but super slow to work with inside the IPR.

I have save UI threads 2/3.

Does anyone know would this be happening? Would the speeds of the cpu matter? Does the IPR only use one core?

If anyone could help that would be super.

Using Core 5.0.1.1, same issue in both maya 2018 & 2017

Cheers,

Joseph

What's laggy and clunky? The time it takes to update the Arnold scene before the rendering starts, or the render itself?

Try increasing the Arnold log verbosity to Info, and setting the ARV to show the full log.

ARV uses all the available cores (except the ones you save for the UI).

Im getting the same Issue in C4DTOA, orbiting in the viewport while the IPR is rendering is defiantly slower than it should be. Actual rendering is quite fast, and the time to start rendering is fine. Its just the openGL nav that is unusable, sub 19fps with just a cube. Tried with different # of threads in the Arnold System settings as well, no change

Im using a iMac Pro osx 10.13.3 (17D2104) 3 GHz Intel Xeon W 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4 Radeon Pro Vega 56 8 GB

When I run bootcamp, or even a parallels instance of C4D it works just fine and is very responsive, as I'm used to. I have tried R19 and R18 on Mac with fresh local and global preferences same problem

C4DtoA 2.2.4 Arnold core 5.0.2.4

I have the same set up as Frederick. We upgraded our Mac Pro to the iMac Pro and this is when I started having issues running C4DtoA. It's almost impossible to work. Every click takes 3-4 seconds to respond. I keep upgrading with new releases and it seems to be worse with the latest 2.3.1.3. We've been using Arnold since it was released for C4d and have been loving the results but now am forced to find another render solution. I've been patiently waiting for an update to fix this issue for almost a year. wft.

Is it like this even with a simple scene?

Can you post an Arnold log for an IPR session? Or send it to support?

How many threads are you leaving free?

One method to potentially speed up viewport performance during IPR is to in arnold ipr window go to Render > Save UI Threads > 3, as mentioned by Stephen Blair
