PaintFx to work with Xgen with arnold?

I'm wanting to make my own custom clump maps with Xgen in Maya but it seems everytime I do try to paint one I'm getting an error

// Warning: Some surfaces have no file texture assigned to the current attribute.

i've seen tutorials with other rendering packages where they just paint them using PaintFX and instantly use them.

How do I work around this? Since its making Xgen quite impossible to use.

Arnold 5 by the way

Xgen is wanting them in Ptex format which I can make by exporting the OBJ and importing into a texturing package and then importing the map but PaintFX is faster.

You can convert the paint fx to polys, export it as an archive and then paint them in XGen.

Alternatively, you could export them as stand-ins and use Mash if you don't want to use XGen.
