SSS with Overlapping Geometry

I have this model, which is made up of many tubes running along the surface of an object. The geometry intersects a lot, but that's not a problem in itself. However, this seems to pose an issue at rendertime. The shader has SSS enabled at 1.0, and for some reason the rays don't seem to penetrate all of the geometry, even at very low radius values. It's kind of looks like what you get with overlapping refractive surfaces when ray depth is too low, only with SSS. The only way I found to resolve this is by increasing diffuse ray depth to the 100+ area, which is impractical for final rendering. I thought SSS sets might be the solution, but this is all actually one object - and therefore has one SSS set. I'd appreciate any advice on how to deal with this.6712-sss.png

Thank you!

Which sss_type? Do you get the same with diffusion?

Is it one object or many separate objects?

Have you tried userdata sss_setname?

The problem persists with all SSS types (Diffusion, Randomwalk, Randomwalk V2).

It's one object, and therefore there's only one SSS set.
