Maya to Cinema 4D

Is it possible to convert a Maya scene to Cinema 4D and preserve all shaders and lights?

If yes, would it render exactly the same?

Can anyone help me to convert this scene to Cinema 4D: https://docs.arnoldrenderer.com/display/A5AFMUG/Learning+Scenes?preview=/71009630/86805056/Sophie_us...

You can export the shaders and import them as .ass files. FBX should preserve the shader assignment. You will just have to replace the shaders.

As Lee said, you can export and import shaders. Note that some DCC specific shaders are not supported, for instance you can not translate a C4D Noise shader to Maya. Also check the length units because they are different in Maya and Cinema 4D. The default in Maya is 1 cm while it's 1m in C4D. You can change that in the render settings in C4DtoA (Export scale).

Thank you both for the reply.

I managed to successfully import it as an FBX into C4D, and imported the shaders as an .ass file.

I’ve used the same settings. However, I can’t get it to render the same way in C4D.

In theory, if all the settings are replicated, would MtoA and C4DtoA render exactly the same?

In theory, yes. What can make a difference is length units, color space settings, etc. You can export the scene from Maya and C4D to an ASS file and compare them, maybe you can see where the difference is coming from.

Can you post some images to see how you are progressing?

Hi Lee,

I have made some good progress importing the scene + shaders in C4D. Not quite matching yet. I'm struggling with the skin. Any ideas?

Nice! Maybe multiply the color texture with a warmer skin tone color? Are you using SSS?

Hi Lee,

I was using SSS, but the scale was off. I got it sorted now, and it is looking much better.

Many thanks for your help!

Thanks Peter. I managed to get that sorted.

The scale difference was the main issue.

That's great! Would you be willing to share the scene so that we can add it to the C4DtoA docs too?

Hi Lee,

Here's the C4D scene file. https://www.dropbox.com/s/plamud7mexln6ct/Sophie_C4D.zip?dl=0

I think I got it to match fairly closely, but not perfect. Any other suggestions would be most welcomed.
