3d container smoke effect will not render in arnold at all

This is the first time I've worked with maya fluids and I am following a tutorial to make a smoke effect. The effect is visible and works in the viewport but when I go to arnold renderview it does not render at all as if it were not in the scene. Everything else in the scene renders fine, lights textures etc but this does not show at all. I have tried making it in a new scene, I have the same problem..

I can't find anything online about what I might be doing wrong as in the tutorials I have watched the fluid renders in arnold seemingly without having to change any settings - if anyone could help it would be very much appreciated - thank you x
