OptiX - is ignoring camera exposure and image controls

There is a strange issue with Optix, at least on this scene I am using for testing. It seems the denoiser can't handle the exposure controls.

And full denoised

Is this just me? Am I doing something wrong?

I think the Optix denoiser works on the Arnold render output, not what comes out of the 3ds Max exposure control.

3ds Max takes the Arnold rendered output and applied exposure control to that.

It's like if you render the RGBA AOV...it won't match what you see in 3ds Max because it doesn't have the exposure control applied.

@ thanks for the reply. That is what I thought Arnold is doing.

So, in that case, what is the point of having this denoiser? I understand that building the Beauty pass with the AOV's you don't get that exposure control, but for a preview, this denoiser isn't useful or practical.

Is there another way to control the exposure, besides tweaking light intensities? Having this denoiser working would really help to sell the idea that Arnold can be used for visualizations. Is this something for the 3ds max dev team to solve?

The point of the denoiser is that it works great with many other applications and plugins. CINEMA 4D and 3ds Max have their own framebuffers, so they are a little different. C4DtoA has it's own IPR window, so we can do Optix Denoising there. That's probably what will happen with MAXtoA.

I understand. I can see then this is more a 3ds max side of things that need to be fixed. I am just flagging some issues that I am finding. Is there a place where I can log these problems? A secret Arnold Beta forum? I already posted this issue on the 3ds Max Beta program. I hope this feedback helps.

This issue already discussed one year ago, it seems Adsk doesn't does not consider that as bug :/. Because no movement to fix it.
Btw, original Arnold camera has exposure control which works with denoisers. Only difference with Max that it doesn't have tone mapping.

I dont have any larger problems using either Operator canvas to make a small node network that controls all cameras exposure, this translates 1:1 through OptiX and raw RGBA.

Nor do I find any issues with Global physical exposure on, that also translates RGBA and RGBA AOV with OptiX denoiser on.

I didn't know that tip for the exposure. Thanks for sharing. Well, this is a bug for sure, I can't imagine saying to someone: oh great, use the Optix, but by the way, you can't use any exposure controls.
