Arnold Metal Support - Mac

With the imminent release of Octane X, it was previously said by Steven Blair that they would be looking into ways of supporting GPU rendering on the mac. It is now over a year since that comment and wanted to know if there has been any update on this matter. Arnold is a very versatile renderer and I would love to be able to use it on my Mac pro in conjunction with my Radeon Pro Vega II Duo.

No, there's no update. We're still working on Arnold GPU for NVidia Optix.

Will we get an update in the future. Octane and Redshift supports Metal on Mac. Is it also planned for Arnold?

There's no specific plans right now. Arnold on Optix is what we're working on.

Just adding my voice to say I would also love to see Arnold GPU developed for Metal someday as well. I prefer Arnold on CPU over most GPU tenderest that I have used still just due to the ease of use and it’s great shading model.

+1000 for hoping it happens someday! Always end up preferring to use Arnold because I just prefer it’s shading model and all the great utility nodes and interactivity.

The dream would be the interactivity and time to first pixel of the CPU renderer with the speed of resolving noise of the GPU working together.

I’m sure it’s a big undertaking but with more and more Nvidia only options now making it happen would love it see it.

I am very skeptical about that. Meanwhile, there are good alternatives with Reshift and Ocatne, but I would also like to see Arnold running on the GPU on the Mac.

See....have both, rs and o, but the question remains, how would Arnold and V-Ray perform under metal

Message 11 of 24

Hi, is there an update, roadmap or plans from Autodesk to look into Arnold GPU and metal support for Macs in the near future, thx in advance

Message 12 of 24

No, there is not. The near future is Optix.

I did some quick testing and Arnold performs pretty well using all 8 M1 CPU cores (under Rosetta) as compared to Octane on the same M1 using 8 GPU cores. That's not to say either is fast, it's just that they are similar. The real question is what happens with the nexts M chip version. Does the CPU get faster by a larger factor than the GPU does?

You can see a short video of my testing here: https://vimeo.com/585470100

Wow interesting to see that Paul. Would be great at the very least to get full M chip support going forward to see how it could perform natively.

I'm currently using Arnold on Maya on the 3D modules I run in my university, but will be switching to other renderers which do have GPU and Apple Silicon support if Arnold continues to lag behind. Arnold is a great renderer. Please support your Mac community.

When can Mac users take advantage of the 32 core GPU (Metal) for Cinema 4D Arnold?

Please get on this asap, I really do not want to switch to Redshift or Octane. 😞

Message 17 of 24

There are no immediate plans to support Metal.

It sounds like: you should switch to another renderer. It’s sad but I have started it with new projects.

so be fair. AMD is lagging behind descend API, just now they released HIP and Apple has great API (metal) but lag behind hardware, just now Apple got more 16GB memory on macbookpro with an M1X.
even Octane or Redshift, they have les 1-2% of the users using a Mac for thats reason. the only reason Blender and Octane have Metal support because Apple "sponsorship"/pay for it.
bottomline: we need more Apple users and hardware ! i like my macbooks / Imac, but i had get nvidia workstation for now until apple comes with decent GPU workstation for decent price.

btw. octane and redshift with metal is extreme buggy and missing features, --> not enough users for features requests and bug report.

On the other hand, it would be fair of the developers of the render software to say Apple users are no longer supported (if they are). Then you have the option to look for a new software instead of waiting forever and not knowing how to invest.

I've been using Redshift for a while now and I must say it runs very well on the Mac in the meantime and is not buggy. I have more crahes with Arnold or other renderers.

It may be that some software has less Apple users, but it can not become more if they are not supported by the software.
