Is subdivision single threaded?

Hi!

I have a scene with alot of scattering, both standins/instances and regular copy to points.

Time to first pixels is getting pretty long, close to 5 minutes. Most of that time only one thread is working in the task manager. Could that be my subdivisions? Or is it more likely IO, textures and standins and such?

best,

More likely file IO for the standins.

An Info-level Arnold log would show more details.
Subdiv is multi threaded.

depends what you do, copy to points might be giving you packed primitives. They are supported in Arnold, but its very slow to render them, as Arnold does them on by one. In RBD fractured workflows, i can recommend unpacking the geo before render instead of rendering packed RBDs, same with houdini crowds.

unpacking the geo before exporting an alembic is way faster to first pixel but the size is quite insane.

my building goese from 400mb packed to 50+GB for only 300 frames RBD animated sim.

Arnold in Maya has much faster first pixel with packed alembics.
