New Version 6.1 for Max Seems Completely Broken

After installing, Ive had to start with a completely new scene and import objects from another scene. Everything is rendering with a preview pass and also rendering in red tones. None of the diagnostics options are checked and preview pass isnt checked either.

This is really weird. A couple of things that crossed my mind. Do you have the latest nvidia driver? Did you Pre Populate the GPU cache? You only have to do that once. I think we will need a more detailed log to see what is happening.

Can confrim this 100%

Furthermore the opposite from this statement in the docs is the case:

Improved performance on Windows: Arnold now runs on average 7-8% faster overall on Windows. (core#5481, core#9876, core#9975)

Message 4 of 24

I can't repro at the moment. Could you guys share a simple scene ?

I realized that I had just updated my driver right before I installed the new version of Arnold. Re-installing and testing now.

Can you post debug logs for before and after? Ideally in a new arnold answers.

I have no idea whats going on here. Ever since I updated Arnold and the driver, my Arnold scenes are rendering red like this. I even went back to an old scene, older version of Arnold, and older driver!!!

UPDATE: Went back to even older scene with Arnold 6.0, older driver and it worked, no preview pass like I want, and rendered with colors.
Updated Arnold version to 6.1, it used preview pass even when unchecked and rendered with color but crashed towards the end of render
Updated driver again and rendered - does a preview pass again without asking, rendered this time with colors, crashed midway. Unusable.

Arnold defaults to the following error colors (this is output from kick -info options):

RGB error_color_bad_texture 1, 0, 0
RGB error_color_bad_pixel 0, 0, 1
RGB error_color_bad_shader 1, 0, 1

So assuming you're using the defaults, red looks like bad textures. Probably it's not finding your textures or it doesn't know how to open your textures. I'm not familiar with maxtoa, but the arnold image node has a setting called ignore_missing_textures. If you have access to that you can set that to false and render with detailed logging settings, it will tell you which textures are missing.

Is this a gpu render or cpu render? If GPU, does it work with CPU?

This is GPU. Thanks for the info, I will check into the image node option and rendering with CPU.

Im not sure why it would be missing any textures let alone all of them. What results should I be expecting with changing the setting on the image node? CPU renders red as well. I went ahead and pre-populated the GPU as well with no better results. Does this have to do with the new partial texture loading to GPU? Its actually gettign worse, now its just rendering this. Stops a quarter of the way through the preview pass that I havent even chosen to use.

If you're getting red renders on the CPU, then I feel confident it's not the new partial texture loading to GPU or GPU drivers. Do a CPU render with debug log verbosity (link to instructions are on this very page) and attach all of it here.

Changing that image node setting will cause Arnold to emit an error message if there's missing textures, which might help with trouble shooting.

Having an issue attaching anything but images to my posts. I'm getting an invalid file error. I rendered with CPU and need to get the log files to you somehow.

How to provide log files:

  • Rename the file from .log to .txt and attach
    arnold.txt
  • You can put multiple log files in a .zip or .rar archive, give that a .txt extension, and upload that:
    arnold.rar.txt

For the Preview pass rendering, if you are using the Arnold Render View, you have to turn off Render > Progressive Refinement (in the Arnold Render View menus)

arnold_log.txtJust using standard production rendering. No IPR.

Ive done some investigating on my end. Its really weird. I went back to Arnold 6.0 with the new display driver still installed and it rendered red. Went back to older display driver and still red. Opened up an older scene than that and it rendered fine. Installed new display driver again and rendered fine. Still with older scene and new display driver, I updated Arnold to 6.1 again, heres the result, it partially renders a preview pass and crashes.preview.jpg

Unfortunately the log you uploaded is almost completely empty. It should contain hundreds of lines of text. Perhaps other log files were generated or you didn't have the right verbosity? Take a look at https://docs.arnoldrenderer.com/display/A5AF3DSUG/Log for possible suggestions.

I think we've confirmed beyond doubt that this is not display driver related.

When it crashed, were you presented with an option to report the crash to autodesk? If so, let us know the CER number and we can take a look at it.

Hoping to just list the log here, Is this the complete log? This is after GPU render, it stops after running a preview render for which I havent chosen, really frustrating.:

No, that's just the start of the log, before the render even starts.

I've attached an example log from a Production render.

And here's a screenshot of what you would see in the Render Message Window:
