Can user_data shaders get data from Object Properties?

How can I feed data from a specific User Defined Object Property into a shader? I'm looking to use a value that was generated in Revit and passed into Max as a User Defined Object Property. It seems that even if I copy the data to the User Options field of the Arnold Properties modifier, the user_data shaders still cannot see it. What has to be done for the data to be visible to the shaders?

The values have to be user data on the object: https://support.solidangle.com/x/EwFeAg

Thanks for the response. Yes, I had been setting it as user data on the object in Max. You can see the setup and result in MaxObjProp.png. I tried adding the Arnold Properties modifier with the same results (MaxObjPropModifier.png). Looking at the link you provided (for C4D), that "user data" is more robust than what is provided in Max for user data (specifying variable type, etc), so I tried adding the data as an Attribute in Max (MaxAttributes.png), still not able to get it to work. Not sure what I'm missing here...

Sorry, I thought I was in the C4DtoA space. User data support in Maxtoa is limited, iirc. Will check it out again tomorrow.
