In Maya,
1. Create an aiAOV node
2. Select it
3. File Export Selected
4. Open the exported file.
5. This file does not contain aiAOV nodes
Is this a feature or a bug? If it's a feature is there a way to export these into a scene? I know you can export AOVs into a json file via the Render Settings panel but we'd like these nodes to live in the scene.
Let me know if you need more info.

Export to what? I'll guess .ma or .mb
That is by design. Maya doesn't export AOVs. AOVs are saved only when you save a scene.
AOVs live in the scene. Exported files are brought into the scene and do not change the render setup.
Thanks Stephen.
Yes! .ma or .mb, either one, it doesn't matter.
A bit of background:
We have assets that require custom AOVs and these AOVs are hooked up to custom toon shading networks. We'd like to publish these through our pipeline and load them in in-shot with the AOVs properly hooked up.
The reason why we want to use `cmds.file(exportSelected=True)` instead of `cmds.file(save=True)` is that we don't want to export other assets and other junk that exists in the scene.
Can you think of a workaround to export these aiAOV nodes to a maya file?
Thanks for your response.
