I'm looking to render a different shader on a per-particle basis.

Hi @Peter Hriso! May you can do it with this methods:

1: You can add copies of the particle object with different shaders assignments:

2: You can export the ID of each particle and change shaders with a shader switch, also you can control the amount of shaders with a ramp:
