C4DtoA Volume Material Preview

I tried making a custom scene so I could have a volume material preview but no luck so far.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  • vdb in 'library --> materialpreview' path. - can see the vdb with standard_surface so I know it's finding it properly, but don't see anything with standard_volume
  • mesh volume - same thing here, obviously shows up with a standard_surface but can't see it with a standard_volume

I assume there must be some way to do this because you can visualize a standard_volume with the Arnold Sphere material preview, I just can't seem to figure out how to recreate this

Currently the volume preview is not customizable, the Sphere is hardcoded. However I can easily make it use a custom vdb in the next release.

Hey there, I noticed the change for this in the changelog but I can't seem to figure out exactly how to get it set up properly.

I've tried:

  • VDB with the file in the "materialpreview" folder and the filename stripped of path i.e. "volume.vdb" instead of "/Users/MyName/Documents/volume.vdb"
  • Mesh volume

Yes, it's added in 2.3.0 and that should be the setup you described. Having an Arnold Volume object called 'Object' with a relative path to the VDB file, located next to the preview scene.

See the attached scene: volume-matpreview.zip

Using the smoke example from the open vdb page: http://www.openvdb.org/download/models/smoke1.vdb.zip

Thanks so much for putting that together for me!
