Why is the licensing system such a pain in the b!?#+!!

Lincense Server, RLM, Network License - to set up a working license for Arnold 5 is incredibly complicated. At least in my case only Arnold Support was able to set it up via remote installation. What if you want to use the same license on your laptop when you're abroad - or you get a new computer? Go through this procedure all over again? This system is turning me off big time. And it will turn talented young people away from this renderer in the future. This needs to be more user friendly.

A great question Oliver! I've spent countless hours battling to get RLM setup and working across multiple machines, as well as needing to request MAC address licensing changes with SolidAngle.. It's incredible that such an expensive piece of software uses such a horrible licensing system.

I also spender a lot of time to get a running license system. Im my eyes the Autodesk License Server is not much more easier to use then the RLM server. To set environment variables or create special files to get the Server running on Linux and OS X is nothing what creative people want to do. An other topic is to find out the computer name to create an new license. Thats definitely not a user-friendly system.

Hi @Oliver Navarro Schroeder, we definitely appreciate the feedback. As of Arnold 5.0.1, Arnold now supports the Autodesk Licensing Framework, which for many users should make things easier. RLM is still supported as well. For details please read more here: https://support.solidangle.com/display/A5AILIC/%5BCLM%5D+Setting+up+Autodesk+licensing

The link you posted are the step-by-step instructions.

This command

./lmgrd –c license_file_list –l debug_log_path

won't start anything. We need to see the real command that you ran.

It takes a minute or two for the full license service to start up, so if you run lmutil lmstat immediately after, you'll get exactly what you described.

Please ask a new question. I'm closing this one, because I don't want every new licensing question tacked on to this one question.

Maybe a better place for questions about the Autodesk network license manager is the Autodesk Installation and Licensing forum:

Is there a step by step set of installation instructions for setting up Autodesk Network Licence Manager for multi-node C4DtoA setup (OS X 10.12)? I've followed the instructions on the Autodesk's site (here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/network-license-administration/install-and-configure-network-license/mac-os/install-the-network-license-manager-mac-os-x-server) but am unable to get the sever running. I have a licence file with correct username and physical address data and it resides in the server installation folder, however starting the server ("./lmgrd –c license_file_list –l debug_log_path") and then querying the server ("./lmutil lmstat -a -c adsk_server.lic") returns "lmgrd is not running: Cannot connect to license server system. (-15,570:64 "Host is down")". Apologies, I haven't much experience with configuring network servers or licensing systems. I'm just a creative, and I really need to get back up and running with Arnold quickly. Thanks.

Running multiple RLM servers is the hard way to do it. Why don't you use just one? Assuming they are all 64-bit, you can have one RLM with three ISV servers (but use at least RLM 12.2BL2).

Changing the web server port? https://www.google.ca/search?q=rlm+change+web+server+port

Add the -ws flag to the rlm command line.

The arnold.sales team sent you an RLM license.

I also agree with pains of licensing. I myself in IT industry and experienced enough in webserver etc., cannot fix it.

I have Foundry's nuke so have their RLM running in 4043 and Nextlimit RLM running in 5053.

Now have Solidangle RLM changed the port to 5060 but by default the web server goes to 5044 and tried different methods but do not how to change the webserver port.

On top of that there is lot of confusion if I were perpetual floating license what I should use RLM or Autodesk. If autodesk I see above there is lot of confusion.

It is killing and wasting time.
