increasing quality of volumetric light rays

Which setting do I change to reduce noise in volumetric light rays? I've tried a few settings, but I only seem to be increasing render times without any improvement in the noise.

So I seem to have managed to get cleaner looking volumetric rays, but now there are negative fireflies present in the areas of the image with the rays - i.e black dots - what's causing those?

You need to increase the Atmosphere Volume Samples.

It could be shadow noise. It's hard to tell without images.

How many light samples do you have?
