Hi everyone,
I'm currently rendering a project and facing to an issue when rendering :
// Error : [denoise_optix_filter] Unknown error (Details: Function "_rtCommandListExecute" caught C++ standard exception: bad allocation) //
And if I try to start it again I get :
// Error: [gpu] GPU rendering is disabled due to a previous error
After some manipulations I got this error too :
// Error: [denoise_optix_filter] Unknown error (Details: Function "_rtCommandListExecute" caught exception: Failed to launch DLDenoiser post-processing stage. DLDenoiser run method failed.)
My specs : 16 GB RAM / I7 6700 / GTX 1070
When I try to render in 540p and 720p the denoiser is working well, but for the 1080p OptiX returns an error. It seems that's a memory problem, when I start the render Maya hits to 13.5 GB RAM used and then go back to 75MB with this error.
I wonder how I can resolve this error, do you have some leads ?
Thank you!

It's not about RAM, it's probably about the available memory on the GPU.
The log header will show how much free memory there is on the GPU.
The 1080 has 8192MB memory, so if I understand well, you're telling me I should have a desktop workstation with Quadro card to render a 1080p image.. ?
So, thank you for your response but how do I solve this problem ? Is it even possible with my current configuration ?
No, not necessarily. But not enough memory is the first thing to consider when there's an error
How many AOVs are you rendering?
And when you get GPU rendering is disabled due to a previous error
then you have to re-start Maya to be able to use the denoiser again
I'm currently rendering four ones with OptiX :
- Diffuse
- Spec
- SSS
- Transmission
I got Ambient Occlusion too but I deleted it.
Do I need to render each AOVs separately in this case ?
Yeah I restart Maya everytime I try something different and that's not working, for an huge project it takes couple minutes to load, that's my evening.. Thank you for helping me there!
You could try just the beauty, then the beauty and one AOV (the beauty is always rendered)
On second thought, if you're using 13.5 of your 16GB of RAM, that might be an issue too.
I tried to render only the denoised beauty by activating the checkbox inside the "Denoiser" tab and it's working. Rendering multiple AOVs was causing me an issue, I guess I had to much ones at the same time.
Now I'm only using 4GB RAM meanwhile the rendering is processing, I don't know why Maya hitted to 13.5.
Thank you again for helping me. If you could add some logs or warnings to the users, for them to understand where does come from the problem it could be really nice.
Have a good evening!
Hi Stephen,
There is a part of my log :
00:00:00 1802MB | host application: MtoA 3.0.1 bf13ff9e (master) Maya 2018 00:00:00 1802MB | running on DESKTOP-S91QKGS, pid=380 00:00:00 1802MB | 1 x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz (4 cores, 8 logical) with 16337MB 00:00:00 1802MB | Nvidia driver version 397.93
00:00:00 1802MB | GPU 0: GeForce GTX 1070 @ 1645MHz (compute 6.1) with 8192MB (5488MB available) 00:00:00 1802MB | Windows 8 (version 6.2, build 9200)
How could I know how much GPU memory do I need to start correctly the render ?
