Hi everyone,
I'm setting up a scene with a 3D character with a 2D image in front and in back of them. I added 2 seperate image planes to the render camera to achieve this, but here's the weird thing...
1) One of the image planes will NEVER show up in the render, no matter what I do.
2) The other image plane will ALWAYS show up in the render, no matter what I do.
The only way I can stop the background from rendering is by going into the Attribute Editor and changing the Display mode to "None", but that's very inconvenient. Even placing it on a display layer and turning that layer off doesn't get rid of it.
On the other hand, there is no way that I've discovered to get the foreground one to appear, ever.
For reference:
Both image planes are identical, aside from the Depth.
They are both assigned to the same camera.
Both are using a PNG image exported from PS.
Anyone have any ideas about what the heck is going on? Thanks!
Ok. image planes are just for references. Use a surface shader on an geometry plane and that will give you the same result. Surface shader doesn't have shading information like an image plane. If you use an ai standard surface than it will be shaded (have global illumination).

@Edward Conry Thanks for the reply! I understand what you're saying, but just to clarify, I wasn't intending to actually render the image planes for the final animation - I'm going to composite the character onto the background art later. I was mostly curious as to why only one image plane shows up in the render despite them being the same, and why one is nearly impossible to turn off in the render.
For further clarification, my plan was to animate with the image planes (and check poses in the render view w/ lighting), then disable them before I batch render/render sequence. But as of right now, not only can I not see the foreground plane in the render at all, but I also can't get the background one to turn off even if I turn off the visibility of the plane or the display layer it's on.
