How to make a cutout of water as seen in MtoA Guide 5?

I've been trying to make a a square cutout of water like the one seen here: https://support.solidangle.com/display/A5AFMUG/Rendering+an+Ocean+with+Displacement?preview=/3650360...

I got the water displacement shader to work on a plane but if I extrude it down or put the shader on a cube the geometry gets all rounded and distorted. Probably from the catclark subdivision iterations? But in the example from Solid Angle they've got a nice square cube but with the displacement only on the top. How can I make this?

I would love to know how that was done too!.

As far as I know, it can't be done with displacement, isn't t?

I believe it was an Ocean Fluid (Content Browser) converted to polys and extruded.
