Visibility in Arnold is just an on/off state, that's why the C4D tag does not work. Best way to do this fading effect in composite. You can animate the cutout opacity of the standard_surfaces shader (disable the Opaque flag in the shape), but it might not give you the correct result.

Animating the color of the Cutout Opacity from white to black WILL make your object gradually fade out (I do it all the time), but you have to add an Arnold Parameter tag to the object and uncheck Opaque (as Peter mentioned). This will be trickier if you have multiple materials applied to your object; you'd have to fade the Cutout Opacity of all of them (I think). There's probably a way to rig materials so one set of keyframes will fade them all.
