HI Everyone, I hope you guys are doing Ok.
I was doing some testing with subdivision on a learning scene, And I've not been able to correct the subdivision using the catmull-clark algorith that comes with the renderer.
I would like to use that one in part because it seems to be a lot faster than opensubdiv that comes with 3dstudio Max.
I was wondering if somebody could advise me on what might Ive been missing.
This is the desired result: Using OpenSubdiv Modifier
But when disable the opensubdiv modifier and enable the Catmull-clark for the objects, Im getting this results:
As you can see there is some pinching on the edges.
I try modifing the creases, but I didnt seem to do much, The object is all quad and it subdivides well with opensubdiv modifier.
I hope someone could advice me.
Im using 3dsmax 2019.1 and Arnold 5.2.0.0 (2.1.945.0)
Thanks a lot.
This is known limitation, which still don't fixed.
Check this thread:

For now, I recommend do not use Arnold subdivs. You can use Opensubdiv modifier instead.
Dang!! It´s been around more than a Year!!!!! 😞
Maybe I should start to learning Maya ASAP, (Hopefully wont be abandoned, as it runs on Linux and major studios still use it for that reason. A Lot more stable OS)
Its seems unlike it to be fixed soon. 2019 came and the problem is still there.
Thanks for your comments.
We just released MAXtoA-2.3.33 , that exports shapes with subdivision/displacement to quads instead of triangles, fixing the reported problem.
See the doc page for details
Hi everyone,
I have a similar problem using the Subdivision
option of the "Arnold properties modifier" in 3ds max 2019.3 Update
(MAXtoA 2.3.33). Perhaps it´s a bug with refractions?
Did you try to use other materials (no glass)?
I try to use Displacement (by map) and Subdivision on a bottle.
As you can see, the bottle rendered in blue looks ok but rendered with glass material it shows ugly distortions. Tried all the different settings for Type (Linear, Catmull-Clark) and UV Smoothing etc.
But even when I use OpenSubDiv or TurboSmooth instead of Arnold Subdivision there are distortions!
Please ask a new question. This question was about MAXtoA getting triangles, not quads, from 3ds Max, which caused subdivision problems. If you're using 2.3.33, then this isn't the same issue.
