Flickering highlights issue

I notice that rendering in Arnold can cause flickering pixels where there are highlights, especially when the object is in the distance and so there is not much pixel area to display highlights. Thus, the highlighted area is confined to a few pixels and any change in the highlight, like from reflecting a moving object, is very noticeable as the pixels seem to flash on and off.

My only solution has been to add a higher value for Specular Roughness to weaken the specular effect.

Has anyone a better solution?

Hi Greg,

Wouldn't insist on calling this solution "better" ;-), but what you could try to do is to enable clamping in your render settings. Sadly, you will lose some dynamic range with this, so you don't want to go very low (maybe between 3-10), but it will decrease the difference between those very bright pixels from your specular reflection and their surrounding and camera AA will smooth it out way better.

We did this to fight flickering in background foliage and could get away with it in most of the shots.

Cheers,

Flo
