Arnold and FumeFX - constant crashes

I am at a loss. For the life of me I can't (and I have been trying for hours every day for over a week) get a single particle plugin to work with Arnold inside 3ds Max 2018. I have the latest plugin version of MtoA and Max 2018... anytime I try to render FumeFX, Kratona, Thinking Particles, etc - all of them cause the render to crash 3ds Max (I've tried both ActiveShade w/ Arnold and Production w/ Arnold).

Can I really not use Arnold to render any cool vfx effects like a flamethrower / etc? They only work when I switch to another renderer (like vRay or scanline). I have a whole scene that is meant to work with Arnold. I can't believe I've been having this much trouble rendering a puff of fire with FumeFX and Arnold...
