why is "create absolute override for visible layer" not working on custom AOV?

hi guys,

I want to create an absolute override for my visible render layer (maya 2018.3 mtoa 3.2.1.1) on the "enabled" flag for a custom AOV. But maya just completely ignores it. it doesn't colorize it orange either. for any AOV that's built-in it's working fine. that's really annoying! any ideas? here's a screen if it helps.
