Can the image color used in a standard volume be transferred onto the volume

Following Lee's tutorial on the STandard Volume shader, I have gotten some decent results in C4D for volume displacement. I'd like to know if there is a way to project the color or the image used for displacement onto the volume?

One way is to use a camera projection and set a camera to project the shader to the scatter color.

You can then step out of the projection camera and the projection no longer sticks to screenspace.

If you want to use some other method go ahead, scatter color is your friend regardless.
