Because it doesn't make sense to interpolate between values for the zdepth. If it would be filtered, you'd get an interpolation of depth values from both your foreground object and your background object around the edges. This is generally unwanted, so it defaults to the "closest" filter. You can change this in the AOV settings if you'd want to for a specific case.

I'm just curious about whether the workflow is correct, because my colleague has always stressed that the need for anti-aliasing Z channel is correct, I hope to get an answer. Thank you again!
I've personally never used a filtered depth aov. I have seen it, but the cases are rare. Use the "closest" filter unless you know what you're doing 🙂
