I can't quite figure out how to export materials from Maya to Houdini Solaris.
In Maya, I've tried Arnold > Scene Export > Export Selection to USD and only leave the Shaders checkbox checked.
Then in Houdini Solaris, I create a Reference node and choose the file path of the materials.usd file I exported from Maya. The Reference node gives me the warning:
Referenced one of several root primitives: <path/to/materials.usd>
It also seems that, when exporting from Maya, it's not possible to parent all Arnold material nodes under a material Scope Prim in an attempt to appease Houdini's warning.
What's the recommended way for transferring Looks from Maya to Houdini Solaris?
If you export shapes and shaders, and put in a prefix with a trailing slash (for example, "example/"), then you'll get a file you can reference.
Thanks Stephen. Although it's a step in the right direction, it still doesn't work.
At least I can see the USD scene graph in Solaris, but rendering it looks like there are no shaders assigned to the geos. Everything has a default light gray color.
The way the materials are organized is also a bit of a mess. Every material node that was used is under the /example/ Prim. So every file node, every color correct, etc in a long list. I guess this is technically accurate to where the nodes are in Maya, but still kind of hard to find anything when using large shader networks.
