I checked the option in the Arnold render setting to enable swatches, but the swatches do not appear rendered. Is there any way to force a refresh, or control when and if swatch refreshes occur in the Hypershade in Maya? Did a search in the docs, and nothing came up for me.

No, that's a known issue. Also, if it did work, rendering swatches will slow things down. That's why it is disabled by default.
"Slow things down?", lol. I would have believed that in the days of the Multilister, on an Athlon, but it seems kind of redundant on a machine with 48 cores in 2021, I feel as I should make use of them while I'm not actually rendering, or is the code written so that it only uses a single one?
Are you sure that Arnold - the core renderer for maya (since several years!) is incapable of showing any material swatches?
It is really unpleasant to work in the maya hypershade even with only just a few materials when there is absolutely no visual distinction. This is such a basic functionality when working with any 3d software in the past 20 years. I am a bit baffled to be honest.

Yes. Same problem here, for soooooooo long.
Same problem for Maya 2023.
I have had Maya since 1998 (!) Crazy.
Back then, we had little bugs, and swatches always worked.
Can anybody explain why a huge system like Maya, does not work on an absolute core function?

Same here in 2022.3.1 30secs in a empty maya , no arnold loaded, no other renderer.
A colleague is 4 minutes to open en 2022.3.1, disk space ok, prefs removed in APP_DIR and C:\Users\"user"\Documents\maya\projects, maya re-insalled.
I try in 2023, 28s on my side on emty maya.
what is this ?
