Can't add animated textures

New to Arnold for C4D and have a mix of excitement and frustration. Enter exhibit A... I add an image texture to a shader, WHICH has an 'Animation" tab, however when i add an MP4 or anything else no animation is added. Just a solid square of red. Makes no sense.

Is this the best forum for these questions? I'm trying to lean into Arnold for C4D but have found very little information so am a bit discouraged by that.

I believe it only works with image sequences.
