Just use one channel R or G or B for masking or use aiColorToFloat node
Damn I'm going through this right now. Can you guys expand a little longer on how to replace the ALremapfloat in the new Arnold. Thank you.
You can still use alremapfloat if you want to, the utility shaders were recompiled for arnold5:
