Renders ridiculously long with Arnold [MtoA] ?

Hello everyone,

I'm an animation student, so I'm still learning and i'm currently having issues with render optimization in Arnold 5, using Maya 2017.

I tried to render this little scene. It's far from finished but i wanted to do a test.

As you can see, it took 10min to render and I feel like it's not normal. I have no textures, so it's all basic Lambert, the resolution was set to half (50%) so the format of this pic is 960x540.

Also here are my render settings :

Even with these render settings, the final image is still a bit noisy, but it takes forever to render given that there is no texture, and only a basic lighting.

I also tried to render this with a 100% resolution, and it takes something like 30 to 40 minutes (still with no textures, so i can't even imagine with textures).

I tried a lot of things already, I don't really know what to do anymore in order to optimize my render settings.

Does anyone have any idea if it's normal ? And if it's not, where it could come from ?

Here are my specs :

CPU - i7 4820k (used a 98%/99% when rendering)

GPU - GeForce GTX 1070

RAM - 16Gb

Thanks for your help !

Increasing Ray Depth by 1 can effectively double render times. What lights are you using and how many light samples do you have? Can you post a screengrab of your viewport with lights etc?

Removing noise tutorials can be found here.

If you have -any- possibility to export an .abc file with the scene, I can give it a go in MAX and possibly cook up a setup which can be applied to your Maya scene. If you just export all mesh it will be fine.

Looks good. I guess every interior is slightly different but the same principals apply. I recommend going through the Reducing Noise and lighting tutorials and try these techniques with other interior scenes.

>I know 10 is way too much, but even when I turn it down, the render isn't significantly faster.

It should be because that is obscenely high.

Change the roof area light to a light portal and see how that affects the look and timings with Ray Depth Diffuse 1 (images please).
