Flat Volumes

Messing around I put an arnold mesh volume tag on a flat polygon and stuck a 3D noise texture on it.

To my surprise, it rendered like this weird single-sided portal or window with all the noise rendering as expected, with paralax, but as if within a flat object. On the back-face, nothing renders at all. I'm curious if anyone can explain exactly what's going on.

How can I have a 1-dimensional volume?

Sounds cool! Got any renders to show?

Sure! At the time I was busy and then the farm was being used. I'll try to render a sequence tonight.
